A couple of days ago Valve fired off an email to some of the big gaming news publications and published the Steam Livingroom webpage containing a typical announcement. The email contained this statement:
We will be talking next week about the steps we're taking to make Steam more accessible on televisions and in the living room. Specifically, we have three announcements to make beginning with the first one on Monday morning.
Each announcement is represented by an image with a countdown timer currently active under the first. If you have been following Valves crusade for more openness and quest for community centric gaming goodness, in just under 5 hours Valve will unveil the first reveal of what may be the future direction of Steam.
Potential details include:
- The SteamBox in various flavours.
- The Valve controller
- A partner hardware program along the lines of Steamworks but for Steam branded goodies.
- A Miracast type device for streaming direct from your PC.
- A Linux based Steam OS
The only text on the Steam Livingroom webpage contains this:
Last year, we shipped a software feature called Big Picture, a user-interface tailored for televisions and gamepads. This year we’ve been working on even more ways to connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living-room. Soon, we’ll be adding you to our design process, so that you can help us shape the future of Steam.
Could the SteamBox be community kickstarted via a campaign in Steam Greenlight? It is all speculative at this point though Gabe Newell recently made this presentation at Linuxcon 2013 which may a little insight into these potential announcements:
